In February I'm starting an EMT-B course. I've made this decision for many reasons, knowledge is the first one, and more patient care is the second. Also, most of our patients are "stable" but allot of them make me nervous, I'd like to be able to help if there is an emergency before help arrives. My youngest kid is also taking the same course, so we can go together, it's at night and neither one of us wants to travel alone. My partner is also considering it. This would be interesting;)
My ambulance company is sponsoring a scholarship program for this course. Paid tuition, books and PAID time off, I'm going to apply for it. I'm sure there's a "catch", such as needing so many EMT hours logged after completion. Nothing is ever free. But the paid time off will be good, as I work the night of the first class.

i applaud you. And I completely understand wanting to know what to do when the sh!t hits the fan. And I think it is a great opportunity. If my hospital offers to pay for grad school, I would apply.
Good for you!
Our service has a lot of families that do EMS together. We are a volunteer organization, but its really cool to get the whole family invovled in a common project. I think it's awesome you guys are taking the class as a family
Put a post up on your blog if you need help with your homework, and I bet you'll get more than you bargined for :)
Congrats for going and as a "frequent flier" thank you! I am glad that you want to challenge yourself as a EMT to be there for the people you transport, as many in my city just like to the "female, must be panic attack" or something similar. Of course, as a person who has stopped breathing in an ambulance or had them cover me with blankets, THEN read my med-alert, then call in to found out what that meant and THEN take off all the blankets and cover me with ice - I literally depend on EMTS who care (yeah, they got it wrong at first BUT they corrected it before I went into Heat Stroke!). So thanks again!
Go for it!!! I'm sure you will do very well. One of the best things I ever did was to go though EMT training. It's come in so handy as a parent. When the guys get hurt, I know if it's something I can patch up or if I should get them into the doctor. (Like when Snake poured hot soup all over himself. Yikes.)
I know you'll rock it :))
Thanks everybody:)!!! I'm nuts, but it's a good kind of nuts:)
Sweet! Have fun with that.
That's really great! It's good for you and just wonderful that you are thinking of those under your care while transporting. Go on and don't look back!
Xclnt!!! Keep us updated!!!
It's great to see you enjoying and growing in your work rather than enduring. Best wishes for fitting everything in.
Yay for you!! You will love the class and your classmates, it is so much fun! Have a great time and keep us updated!
